Social media dominates internet usage in Colombia

Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other social networking sites continue to captivate the attention of Colombians, with some 63.8% of users accessing them last year, according to government statistics agency DANE.

With 22.5 million Colombians using the internet last year, 22 million Colombian accounts exist on Facebook.

E-mail usage also seems to be increasing along with other forms of electronic messaging, the results of the survey indicated, with more than half of all internet users sending and receiving electronic mail.

However, the survey also mentioned that other types of internet usage are declining, such as online education services and banking.

Online purchasing of goods saw a marginal uptick, going from approximately 5% of internet usage in Colombia in 2013 to 5.6% in 2014, perhaps indicating continuing Colombian discomfort with this medium for shopping.

Some of the most popular purchases online included airline tickets, hotel reservations, electronic articles, clothes and footwear.
