Smuggler caught stashing cash in gum

A man was apprehended at the Mexico City airport attempting to smuggle $57,200 to Colombia hidden inside boxes of gum, shoes and deodorant, El Espectador reported Tuesday.

Alejandro Suverza Tellez, whose nationality was not given, was intending to travel with the clandestine cash to the southwest Colombian city of Cali, reported Mexico’s Public Security Secretariat.

In a random luggage check, police found $300 folded inside a gum wrapper and another $15,000 inside a cup stashed inside his suitcase. Apparently, Suverza showed marked nervousness when questioned about the money and failed to produce a corresponding declaration for the foreign currency in his possession.

After a more extensive search of his luggage Mexican police found $3,500 inside a camera case, two packs of gum which each contained $3,000, two pair of sandals concealing a total of $24,000 and a stick of deodorant worth $5,500. The remainder of the money was hidden between his clothes.
