Six more Soacha suspects released

by Adriaan Alsema January 13, 2010

Colombia news - Soacha suspects

Six more soldiers, all suspected of the extrajudicial murders of eleven young men from Soacha, were released on Tuesday after the prosecution was not able to call the suspects to trial within the legal deadline.

Last week, another seventeen suspects in the so-called “false positives” case were released on the same grounds.

The controversial releases, all of which followed defense lawyers’ arguments that the suspects hadn’t been tried within the 90-day legal time limit, caused President Alvaro Uribe to call for a change in law that would exclude suspects of heinous crimes and human rights violations from the right to a swift trial.
