Shakira’s former employees accused of extortion and defamation

Shakira’s lawyers have announced that in the following days an official statement will be released against the Colombian singer’s former employees for extortion and defamation, reported local media.

The Colombian couple, known only as Divier and Maritza, were allegedly dismissed in May for refusing to cook her a meal in the middle of the night. The former employees refused to sign the dismissal contract, saying their removal was illegal and unfair.

Those that have worked closely with the singer assured media that the Barranquilla native had always taken the best of care of her employees and their families, including the dismissed couple that had worked for her for 11 years.

The couple threatened to share private videos of Shakira and her soccer star boyfriend Gerard Pique if the singer did not pay them $150,000.

Shakira’s lawyers have denounced all accusations made by her former employees and have said they are lying about the terms of their dismissal.

“[There was] an evident and clear intention to defame and do harm to my client by taking advantage of her public figure and unimpeachable personal reputation in exchange for money,” said Shakira’s lawyer.
