Colombian hip-shaker Shakira came out on top at this year’s Latin Billboard awards on Thursday, walking away from the glitzy ceremony with two prizes.
The glamorous singer attended the awards ceremony alongside some of the biggest names in Latin music, including Ricky Martin, Juan Luis Guerra, Luis Fonsi and Nelly Furtado.
During the course of the night Shakira was named best female artist in the categories of “Hot Latin Songs” and “Tropical Airplay.”
Audiences at the ceremony, which was held in Puerto Rico’s Jose M. Agrelot de San Juan stadium, were treated to performances by Dominican band Aventura and Puerto Rican singer Tito “El Bambino.”
Several of the musicians who attended the event, including Ricky Martin, spoke out against a recently approved law in the U.S. state of Arizona that requires immigrants to carry documents verifying their status – a law that Shakira has been actively campaigning against, saying it “attacks the human and civil rights of Latinos.”
