Shakira denies gig for controversial Chechen leader

Shakira denied reports Thursday that she is planning to play a gig at the 35th birthday party of controversial Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov next month.

The Colombian pop star and singer of smash hit “Hips don’t lie” quashed the reports via her Twitter page saying “contrary to any misreporting Shakira is not performing, nor was she ever planning to perform, a gig for the Chechen president or government.”

The statements were made following international reports yesterday that Shakira would be joining other famous faces, such as Kevin Costner, Eve Mendes and Hilary Swank for the star-studded birthday celebrations of the Chechen leader for his October 5 birthday.

A spokesperson for the president had recently announced that Kadyrov would be throwing a glitzy birthday bash in the country’s capital city, Grozny, and that Shakira would be singing some tracks and shaking those infamous hips for the party goers.

Shakira, recently named “person of the year” at the Latin Grammys, insists that there is no truth in the Chechen government’s claims.

Accusations of human rights abuses and sex scandals against the young president may have had something to do with Shakira’s decision to turn down the controversial birthday boy’s party invitation.
