Colombian superstar Shakira sang the incorrect lyrics to her native country’s national anthem at the Summit of the Americas in Cartagena, local media reported.
Shakira botched two parts of her national hymn. Instead of singing “En surcos de Dolores,” she said “El surco de Dolores” and instead of “La libertad sublime,” she belted out “La libertad de ublime.”
The blunder sent shockwaves throughout social media sites like Twitter and Facebook, with many Colombians criticizing the artist for not spending enough time in her homeland.
The mistake that attracted the most attention was the “la libertad de ublime” line, which translates to the “Ublime’s freedom,” as opposed to “Liberty sublime” and prompted several images on Facebook mocking the Barranquilla-born star such as that depicting a gravestone asking for the freedom of the fictional Ublime character.
A newly edited version of the performance with the correct lyrics has recently appeared on Shakira’s official YouTube site.
