Senator arrested for ‘parapolitics’

Colombian authorities captured another coalition senator for allegedly having ties to demobilized paramilitary organization AUC.

Senator Juan Carlos Martinez is suspected of having enjoyed the support of two of the AUC’s blocs and was voted into Congress through intimidation by paramilitary forces.

Demobilized paramilitary warlord ‘HH’ had testified about the senator’s links to the AUC. Investigators of the Prosecutor General’s office also found a video where Martínez is attending a family reunion of drug trafficker Olmes Duran.

The Prosecution has opened investigations into some seventy congressmen, mostly from coalition parties, for allegedly having used paramilitary support to be voted into Congress.
