Senator alleges mafia funding of political campaigns

A Senator alleges that the mafia is funding Congressmen’s political campaigns in the department of Risaralda and suggested the government finance politicians’ election campaigns to avoid this problem.

According to the Senator Maria Isabel Mejia “criminals are paying 20 million pesos to town councilors and others in Risaralda” and she fears the situation may be the same “in the rest of the country,” Caracol TV reported Thursday.

Mejia proposed that the government provide election candidates with resources so that they are not tempted to resort to accepting funds from groups outside of the law.

In response to Mejia, Minister for the Interior Fabio Valencia Cossio said the government will evaluate if such a proposal could be accommodated in the national budget.

El ministro del Interior, Fabio Valencia Cossio, manifestó después de escuchar la denuncia, que el Ejecutivo podría costear a los candidatos al Congrereso con el presupuesto nacional, medida que sin embargo, será evaluada.
