Second Colombian pitcher to join Major League Baseball

by Neda Vanovac September 15, 2009

Colombia news - Ernesto Frieri

Colombian pitcher Ernesto Frieri was promoted to the Major League by his team, the San Diego Padres.

He is only the second Colombian pitcher to reach the Major League. Emiliano Fruto was the first with the Seattle Mariners in May 2006.

“I’m happy, this is the dream of every ballplayer, to get to the majors. Now I’ve done that, after five years of constant work, I will have to work hard to stay forever,” Frieri told newpaper El Universal.

On his ascent into the Major League, Frieri joins fellow Colombians Luis Castro, “Nato” Ramirez, “Jackie” Gutierrez, Edgar Renteria, Orlando Cabrera, Jolbert Cabrera, Yamid Haad and Emiliano Fruto.
