Santos wants to normalize relations with Ecuador

by Katharina Wecker May 22, 2009

Colombia’s Defense Minister Juan Manuel Santos sent a conciliatory
message to Ecuador and Venezuela to renew their relations, a day before
his last day in office Saturday.

The Defense Minister said he hopes “wholeheartedly” to normalize relations with Ecuador. The President of Ecuador, Rafael Correa, broke all diplomatic ties with Colombia after the latter bombed
a FARC camp on Ecuadorean territory without warning Ecuadorean
authorities.

“The people of Ecuador and Colombia are inextricably linked by history, culture, tradition and by the common struggle against poverty,” Santos said in an interview with newspaper HOY. “Colombia’s government is ready to normalize relations with Ecuador” added theman, under whose command Colombian armed forces bombed the camp.
