Santos to not assume Uribista leadership

Colombia’s former Defense Minister Juan Manuel Santos said Tuesday he will not assume leadership of the Partido de la U, whose leader, Luis Carlos Restrepo, resigned on Monday.

In an interview with Caracol Radio, Santos denied assuming the leadership of the coalition’s most Uribista party and also said he was not going to be a presidential candidate until there is clarity on the aspirations and possibilities for Uribe to run for a third term.

Santos told the radiostation he is seeking rapproachment with Cambio Radical, the coalition party that opposes Uribe’s re-election, to make them return to the pro-re-election coalition, as well as sectors within the Liberal Party.
