Santos receives keys to Mexico City

President Juan Manuel Santos received the keys to Mexico City Tuesday during his visit to review a number of treaties between Colombia and Mexico.

Santos received the honor from Mexico City Mayor Marcelo Ebrard.

“Thank you, thank you very much, Marcelo Ebrard for giving me one of the most cherished honors of my life,” said Santos, delighted to receive the distinction. “In Mexico and Colombia we are united by our love of freedom and democracy and that is one of the great achievements of our time.”

Santos expressed pleasure at being in the former capitol of the Aztec Empire and noted that many Colombians had visited Mexico City, including writers Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Alvaro Mutis.

The president said that it was “impossible not to fall in love with the city at first sight” and marvelled at the size and grandeur of it.

During his stay in Mexico, Santos has witnessed the signature of a number of treaties including an extradition treaty and an agreement to cooperate on crime and security issues.
