Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos on Saturday asked media for “discretion” and “prudence” regarding their reporting on the upcoming peace talks with the FARC.
The president said that “nobody is impeding” the media from reporting on the peace process, but stressed that there are “certain cases, certain circumstances in which a certain discretion and a certain prudence from the media, from journalists is necessary and responsible.”
Speaking at a public rally, the president said that “you, all Colombians will maintain informed, not in detail, because as you understand there are things in processes like this to keep at the negotiation table without coming to light until some agreements are made.”
Representatives of the Santos administration, business leaders and the armed forces will begin formal peace talks with the country’s largest guerrilla group FARC on October 8 in Norway. If the talks are successful, the FARC promised to end its 48-year armed conflict with the Colombian state.
