Santos admits ‘serious security problems’

President Juan Manuel Santos admitted that Colombia still faces “serious security problems,” despite its continuing efforts to curb terrorism and crime.

According to Caracol Radio, Santos explained that guerrillas are still very capable of causing harm.

“We have not won the battle against terrorism, we have not won the battle against crime, serious security problems remain but we are facing them and we are overcoming them,” said Santos.

“We will not stop the larger operations which is what they want, we continue in the strategy of rounding them up more and more and debilitating them more and more,” the Colombian president explained.

Santos also announced that the government will activate the “Democracy Plan” this week in an effort to provide order and stability against terrorism during the late October local elections.

Defense Minister Juan Carlos Pinzon also spoke about the nation’s security plan and defended the government’s decision to increase the National Police Force by 20,000 officers over the next four years.
