Santa Marta improves facilities for the disabled

The Capital of the department of Magdalena, Santa Marta, is to adopt a pilot program to improve facilities for the disabled, government officials decided in a meeting on social development Thursday.

“Looking after the disabled is part of a Human Rights framework expected by international standards. We therefore want to turn Santa Marta into a pilot city to serve their disabled population, taking advantage of the willingness expressed by Mayor Juan Pablo Diaz Granados, ” said Vice President Angelino Garzon, who attended the meeting.

The Magdalena governor, Manuel Jose Bonnet, and the Deputy Minister of Labour Relations, Ricardo Echeverri, were also present and threw their weight behind the project.

The Vice President also reiterated the importance of the national government along with the Caribbean region, to meet their obligations to provide humanitarian aid and bolster the reconstruction effort after the worst winter flooding in Colombian history took its toll on the area last year.
