Santa Marta hosts 2010 Fiesta del Mar

by Leo Palmer July 22, 2010

fiesta del mar, colombia

Santa Marta, on Colombia’s Caribbean coast, is set to host the 2010 Fiesta del Mar from July 28 to August 1, including the National Beach Games, an international beauty contest, and a celebration of 485 years since the town’s founding.

The second National Beach Games, which were also held in Santa Marta last year, will bring more than 500 sportsmen to the town to take part in a wide variety of competitions including the half marathon, beach volley ball, water polo and a triathlon.

This year’s beauty competition will see contestants from Colombia and beyond fighting for the title of “National and International Queen of the Sea.” Would-be queens will have to show off their aquatic skills and take part in a bathing suit pageant to lay claim to the Sea Queen’s crown.

The women will be judged by an actress, a designer, a dentist, and Exxon Movil’s head of political affairs, Ignacio Noguera.

Other highlights include the Floats Parade on the July 30, which passes through the city’s main streets accompanied by live music.
