Bogota ombudsman charged with accepting bribes

Colombia news - Francisco Rojas

Colombia’s Inspector General on Tuesday filed charges against Bogota’s ombudsman Francisco Rojas Birry for allegedly receiving bribes from pyramid company DMG.

The charges state that Rojas Birry was faced with a “conflict of interests,” with one of DMG’s founders, William Suarez, claiming that the ombudsman had received up to COP200 million ($78 thousand) from the firm in 2008.

According to the inspector general, “it would seem that the ombudsman did not declare himself hindered when commissioning operatives in the investigation of the DMG, a company with which Rojas Birry had personal ties.”

Rojas Birry was first suspected of receiving bribes from DMG in April 2009.
