Colombian goalkeeper Rene Higuita is among a select number of former
soccer players that are to receive a Golden Foot Career Award in
According to the organisation’s official website, the Golden Foot Career is given to those that “stand out for their sports results (both as single players and with their team), for their personality and for the esteem of the public and football experts.”
Last year, Aldair Santos, Igor Belanov, Luis Suarez Miramontes and Zinedine Zidane won the trophy. This year, Higuita and German Karl-Heinz Rumenigge are among the winners.
Higuita gained international fame for his legendary ‘Scorpion Kick’ in a friendly match with England. The move consisted of a dive forwards with the legs up in the air, swiping the incoming ball away as if using a scorpion’s tail.
The Colombian is only the second keeper to be given the award, after Italian Dino Zoff in 2004. The ceremony takes place
