Referendum organizers sued for fraud

The organizers of the referendum demanding the re-election of President
Álvaro Uribe will have to appear in court after having been accused of
fraud.

Opposition Representative Germán Navas Talero filed a complaint for processional fraud against the referendum’s main promotor Luis Guillermo Giraldo Hurtado.

According to the Polo Democrático respresentative, the organization of the referendum have tried to mislead the National Registry Office saying the finances of the referendum were legal, while there was a triangulation of the money to avoid electoral laws.

How the referendum was funded is still unclear. The non-profit organization that paid 2 billion pesos (US$1 million) so far has not been able to clarify where it got the money from.
