Referendum collapsed: Conservatives

Colombia’s Conservative Party is studying the Uribe re-election
referendum again, because of the judicial investigations against the
organization of it. The party does not rule out the possibility of withdrawing support for the referendum.

Even the Vice-President of the party, Alirio Villamizar, says that the referendum, which seeks the possibility of President Álvaro Uribe running for re-election in 2010, has collapsed.

“This project really has some very difficult situations that prevent it moving forward,” the Congressman told newspaper El Espectador.

Party president Afraín Cepeda told the newspaper a number of voices to stop the project can be heard in the Conservative benches.

The party will meet Wednesday evening to discuss the referendum and a possible withdrawal of support from the Conservatives.

The referendum came under scrutiny after the organization was suspected of illegally funding the popular vote. Both the Prosecution, the Senate and the Electoral Council are currently investigating the initiative.
