The International Red Cross is waiting to receive the coordinates of
the location where FARC guerrillas will hand over six hostages, the aid
organization said Monday.
Delegates of the ICRC met with Colombian Defense Minister Juan Manuel Santos Monday to seek guarantees the hostages could be delivered safely without intervention by the Colombian military.
An ICRC spokesman said there had been contact with the FARC Monday, but the guerrillas are still to give the exact location of the hostage release.
Once the coordinates are known to the ICRC the Colombian government should open a humanitarian corridor and gove the Red Cross free way to pick up the hostages at the designated location.
The FARC promised to release the two politicians and four members of the security forces as a sign of good will to a group of Colombian intellectuals, headed by opposition senator Piedad Córdoba, who have established a correspondence with the rebels to seek a political solution to the Colombia’s 44-year old violent conflict.
