The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) asked the Colombian
government to hand over the body of slain FARC commander ‘Raúl Reyes’ to
his family. The FARC was asked to do the same with the body of deceased
hostage Julian Guevara.
During the presentation of the ICRC’s report on 2008, the head of the ICRC in Colombia, Christphe Beney said it is “morbid to talk about an exchange of bodies” but urged both parties to surrender the remains as soon as possible.
The FARC proposed an exchange of the remains of the dead hostage and the dead commander, but Colombian authorities deny having the remains of the slain FARC commander and claim they have been handed to his ex-wife.
Reyes’ family denies ever having seen the body of their father and former husband.
‘Raúl Reyes’ was killed on March 1, 2008 when his camp in Ecuador was bombed by the Colombian armed forces.
