The Colombian Red Cross asked the national government and the
country’s largest rebel group FARC for “generosity” to break the
deadlock in the operation to release hostage Pablo Emilio Moncayo.
The FARC promised to release the soldier months ago already, but the operation has come to a halt over the government’s refusal to allow opposition senator Piedad Cordoba to be part of the commission to secure the hostage’s release. The FARC insist on Cordoba’s presence.
FARC leader Alfonso Cano earlier this week accused Colombian President Alvaro Uribe of refusing compromises and generosity and so endangering the release of the hostage that’s been in guerrilla custody for more than 11 years.
“As International Committee of the Red Cross we are not going to comment on who is more uncompromising than the other. Rather, we ask generosity of the parties,” Red Cross delegate to Colombia, Christophe Beney said Thursday.
Beney met with the government’s Peace Commissioner Frank Pearl to seek possibilities to reactivate the liberation process.
