by Taran Volckhausen October 16, 2013

One person died and another five were wounded when alleged rebels of Colombia’s largest rebel group, the FARC, opened fire at a bus driving from Medellin to to the Caribbean coast.

The guerrillas fired upon the bus after a bus driver refused an order to pull over at rebel road block in Valdivia, a municipality in the north of the Antioquia state, according to local media reports.

One passenger died at the scene while another five were wounded and transported to a local hospital.

The highway was closed after rebels parked a tractor trailer across the road near to where the bus attack took place, leaving authorities concerned that there might be explosives in the area.

The government said Tuesday that the FARC is carrying out a country-wide wave of attacks as part of the rebels’ “Black October” offensive.
