‘Uribe ordered opposition senator to be shadowed’

by Adriaan Alsema October 21, 2008

Colombian President Álvaro Uribe personally ordered Colombia’s intelligence
service DAS to monitor every movement made by opposition senator
Gustavo Petro of Polo Democrático, the senator denounced Tuesday.

The senator showed newspaper El Espectador internal DAS memos revealing the secret service was asked to submit detailed reports on his activities. The memos ask the service to pay attention especially to “contacts with people who are provided as witnesses to testify against the government.”

The memos would also reveal Uribe asked the DAS to establish links between the opposition party and illegal armed groups.

Uribe has accused Petro and his colleague Piedad Córdoba (Liberal Party) of manipulating witnesses in trials against politicians who made deals with paramilitary organization AUC.

the senator denounced being monitored before the Senate’s First Committee.
