“Kill an indian for a pound of rice”

Cauca indigenous leaders say they have received death threats from a
right wing group calling themselves “Colombians in defense of the
homeland” following the indigenous’ anti government protests.

“A communique threatening the indigenous leadership basically says they want this country without indigenous, that we are only one percent. They have a slogan that says ‘kill and indian and receive a pound of rice’,”indigenous leader Dario Tote told newspaper El Liberal.

According to the indigenous leader, the text was full of intimidating and insulting language aimed at the indigenous community.

Tote said that the indigenous would not stop their protest despite the threats.

Tens of thousands of indigenous Colombians are marching through the south of Colombia demanding the return of stolen lands, better health care and education and government protection from right wing groups that already have killed a number of indigenous leaders over the past few months.

The natives are expected to talk with Colombian president Álvaro Uribe this weekend, after an earlier attempt to talk failed last week.
