Colombian public officials get 2% salary hike

by Angela González January 19, 2010

Colombia news - money

All Colombian public employees will receive a 2% wage increase, affecting the paycheck of close to a million public employees, officials declared Monday.

CM& reported that unions immediately rejected the proposed salary increase for executive officials.

The state payroll covers over 900,000 employees. The minister of housing declared that the 2% increase will be instituted across the board, regardless of status, and that a larger increase is not permitted. The wage increase is based on last year’s inflation rate.

In response to the statement, unions say they will organize a strike.

The government payroll is estimated at COP20 trillion.
