Prosecutor General candidate suspected of bribery: W Radio

One of the candidates to succeed Prosecutor General Mario Iguaran is
investigated for allegedly trying to bribe members of the State Council
while he was a magistrate of this judicial body.

The Prosecutor General’s Office, the department aspiring PG Juan Angel Palacio hopes to lead after the election, is investigating accusations by assistant judge of the Council of State, Hugo Alberto Marin, that Palacio had tried to convince his colleagues to take decisions that would protect his then-boss Mauricio Fajardo, radio station La W reported Monday.

“The then member of the council Palacio told me to please evaluate the process appropriately, but to keep in mind that if the ruling ends up being in favor of the plaintiff, he will be offering money to Palacio Hincapie and to me,” Marin testified.

The Prosecutor general’s Office, the Inspector General’s Office and the President of the State Council all received the complaint of the assistant judge in july 2008, the radio station said.

The radio station published the official criminal complaint on its website.

Palacio is one of three candidates President Uribe pushed forward tosucceed the current Prosecutor General.
