Preview: Liga Postobon Week 11

by Jonathan Roorda April 3, 2010
1.1k

New Colombian leaders Independiente Medellin defend their top spot this Saturday in a home match with Cucuta Deportivo, while Real Cartagena try to reconquer the lead at home against La Equidad a day later.

After Medellin beat Deportivo Pereira 1-2 in midweek, the defending champions are once again on top in Colombia’s Liga Postobon. This Saturday, Leonel Alvarez face their next task against a troubled Cucuta side that are currently in 16th place.

Medellin will likely just have the league left to focus on after the Copa Libertadores group phase, in which a defeat to Racing Club last week most probably means the end to their continental aspirations.

In the league, things are going much better. Of the last seven games no less than five were won and two were drawn.

The last time Medellin met with Cucuta, in November last year, the eventual champions would win 2-1.

On Sunday, Cartagena will attempt to jump back to the top in a home game with Bogota side La Equidad, who are currently in 13th place.

Last week, Cartagena suffered their first defeat of the season losing 3-0 at Deportivo Pereira. The coastal team will want to bounce right back from that huge disappointment, but the question is whether it has affected their confidence.

Cartagena have yet to win a match against La Equidad. Of the four previous encounter, La Equidad won two and the other two ended undecided.

Also on Sunday, third-placed Deportes Tolima visit Cortulua and fourth-placed Junior travel to face Once Caldas.
