Chained to the statue in Bogota’s Plaza de Bolivar, presidential candidate Robinson Devia began a hunger strike Monday to protest against the what he sees as biased media coverage of the presidential campaigns, reports El Espectador.

The candidate for the Voice of Conscious Movement is claiming that his campaign has been discriminated against “not only by the mass media, but also by various state institutions headed by the president.”

“With the peaceful takeover of the Plaza de Bolivar, The Voice of Consciousness seeks to raise our voices in protest over the violation of the democratic rights of Colombian citizens,” Devia said from his place by the Simon Bolivar statue.

“Today we go on an indefinite hunger strike amid the rejection of Colombian democracy: we are chained to the truth,” Devia added.

Devia, along with other lesser known candidate Jaime Araujo of Alianza Social Afrocolombiana (ASA), complained in late March of their lack of media coverage.

In voter polls Devia registers less than 1% of the national vote.

The Voice of Conscious Movement is a political movement which claims to be free from traditional political alignments such as right and left wing. However, the party has so far remained silent on the precise reforms it intends to support.
