Colombian Conservative Presidential candidate Andres Felipe Arias promised U.S. President Barack Obama he would continue the military alliance between the two countries if elected president.
Arias sent a letter to Obama Friday stating that as Colombian President he would continue with the military agreement that gives the U.S. access to seven Colombian military bases as well as maintain the intiatives of Plan Colombia, El Espectador reported Friday.
Arias’ move was a dig at rival Polo Democratico presidential candidate Gustavo Petro, who in a previous letter to Obama, requested that the U.S. revoke the controversial pact and said if president he would abolish the deal.
“The agreement is a sign of commitment from both countries to share experience, information and technology in the fight against these evils that affect our peoples,” Arias’ letter read.
