Colombia’s president congratulates Rigoberto Uran on Giro d’Italia cycling win

The President of Colombia has taken to Twitter to praise Colombian cyclist Rigoberto Uran on his first place finish at halfway stage of Giro d’Italia road cycling race.

Rigoberto Uran’s first individual time trial victory has given Colombian cyclists 17 victories over the last three major cycling races, including the Tour du France and the Vuelta a España, according to La Semana magazine.

The President congratulated Rigoberto Uran for his Giro victory and said it was a happy day for all Colombians.

Last year, Uran finished second at the Giro d’Italia, becoming the first Colombian in history to reach the podium of the Italian competition, according to Colombian newsmagazine Semana. He said at the time that the win was “a big deal.”

The 12th stage marked the halfway point of the Giro d’Italia, which began with three stages between in Belfast, Northern Ireland and Dublin in Ireland between May 9 and 11.

The race is set to conclude after the 21st stage in Trieste, Italy on June 1.
