Socialist party Polo Democratico will support former Olympic weightlifter and congresswoman Maria Isabel Urrutia in the Cali mayoral elections.
Urrutia served as a member of congress between 2006 and 2010. She also won a gold medal in weightlifting at the 2000 Sydney Olympic games.
She is also known for her work with the Social Afrocolombian Alliance and the African population in Colombia.
According to the Polo Democratico Party, “guarantees for about 3,200 candidates from around the country who aspire to various public positions” have been endorsed by the party.
A member of the party’s executive board, Jaime Dussan Calderon, said that his party has denied the support of three candidates for judicial proceedings that are still ongoing.
