The president of Colombia’s Polo Democratico party, Jaime Dussan, announced his resignation Monday after his party’s disappointing results in Sunday’s congressional elections.

Left-wing party Polo Democratico received little more than 7% of the national vote, a drop of nearly 3% from the last elections, prompting Dussan to publicly announce his resignation.

“The results were responsibly assessed and consequently I present my irrevocable resignation as party president,” Dussan said.

“The party has not been defeated and the democratic left remains strong. I congratulate the youth and intelligence which will take the party forward from here and I wish them the greatest success,” said Dussan.

Dussan has held a seat in Colombian Congress since 1998.
