Polo Democratico member assassinated in Barranquilla

by Neda Vanovac October 27, 2009

Colombia news - Polo

A member of opposition party Polo Democratico’s Atlantico department executive committee was killed Monday near his home in Barranquilla.

Jaime López Barros, 53, was returning home after leaving his three year old daughter at the bus stop when a gunman shot him in the neck at 7.55 am. Seriously wounded, he was taken by passersby to the General Hospital but doctors could do nothing to save his life, reported Radio Santa Fe.

“Although the case is still under investigation, the target was a member of the leadership of the Polo Democratico Atlantico and founder of the Party in the Atlantic [region of Colombia]. We seem to be [dealing with] a highly organized and well-financed criminal mafia who kill as they please, with large weapons and silencers, ” said on of the Polo Democratico leaders in the region, Max Noriega.
