Uribe needs to decide if he will run: candidates

Colombia’s presidential candidates said Wednesday that President Alvaro
Uribe should decide soon whether he will run for the presidency
election in 2010.

The
four presidential candidates, German Vargas Lleras, Luis Eduardo
Garzon, Carlos Holguin and Marta Lucia Ramirez, presented their
political plans in La Casa de América in Madrid and expressed their
concerns about the political uncertainty generated by Uribe’s
indecision as to whether he will run for re-election.

Garzon believes that it is time for a “post Uribe” era, El Espectador reported.
Carlos Holguin said that “if the Colombians want Uribe to continue, we
must respect that decision. However, we should think about a successor.”

All
four presidential candidates agree that Uribe achieved a lot in matters
of security against guerrillas but has to improve the security in
every-day life of Colombia’s citizens.

Uribe still did not give any comment on his possible re-election. “I
prefer the silence which does not generate any rumors,” the President
said recently.

The final vote on the referendum on constitutional change that would allow Uribe to be re-elected was postponed after the end of parliamentary recess on July 20.
