Policeman killed in ‘FARC’ ambush following bomb attack in western Colombia

One policeman died from gunshot and shrapnel wounds following an alleged FARC ambush Saturday in Morales, western Cauca Department, local media reported.

Officers were responding to an earlier bomb attack near the police station in Morales, which destroyed at least four properties and damaged others, according to the newspaper Vanguardia.

Three other anti-riot officers were injured in the ambush, which police claim was launched by the FARC’s mobile column Jacobo Arenas, which operates in the region, the paper reported.

Police had been called in to provide security after the bombing.

The Morales government secretary Carmen Cruz said on Saturday the explosives had been hidden in an abandoned truck, reported weekly Semana Sunday. The paper also reported that the police investigation into which group was responsible remained ongoing.
