Police thwart FARC plot to assassinate Santos

Colombian authorities say they thwarted a plot by the FARC to assassinate Defense Minster Juan Manuel Santos.

Preliminary investigations reveal that the guerrilla group had learned the location of Santos’ farm and planned to enter it disguised as policemen and assassinate him.

According to authorities, the plan was devised by ‘James Patemala’, leader of the Teófilo branch of the FARC.

Ten guerrillas were arrested and police uniforms, motorbikes painted police colors and a collection of guns were seized.

In an interview with Radio Caracol, Police Director Óscar Naranjo said that in the last 22 months, 11 guerrilla assassination plots against the Defense minister had been uncovered. He said that at least four branches of the FARC currently have direct orders to assassinate Santos.
