Police says three officials were involved in wiretapping judge

Three police officers were involved in the illegal wiretapping of phones of Supreme Court magistrate Ivan Velasquez, the National Police announced Tuesday.

According to a press release, the officials all belong to the anti kidnapping and extortion unit of the National Police and had requested the judge’s phonecalls to be intercepted as part of an investigation.

Velasquez is in charge of the investigations against politicians who are suspected of having sought political gain through deals with paramilitary death squads. He was previously one of the victims of illegal spying activities by Colombia’s intelligence agancy DAS.

The National Police now asks the Inspector General to open a disciplinary investigation against the three suspects.
