Police capture 25 ELN guerrillas in Santander

by Kirsten Begg March 30, 2009

25 members of the ELN were arrested in a police operation. The captured guerrillas are believed to be members of the Capitán Parmenio branch of the ELN.

The guerrillas were captured in the department of Santander in the early hours of Monday morning.

According to authorities, those arrested were the last members of the Capitán Parmenio branch of the ELN, which operates in the north-east of Colombia.

Commander of the Fifth Police Region, General José Rolando Delgado, told El Tiempo that following the arrests, the group was on the point of  extinction.

“We only need to capture five or six more people to completely dismantle this group,” said Delgado.

Among the captured was Froilán ‘Lolo’ Cala, who authorities say is the right hand man of the ELN Santander commander ‘Mono Fabio’.

The 25 detainees have been linked to crimes of extortion and rebellion, among others.
