Belyaev had a red alert notice for his location and capture by Interpol, related to a crime committed in 2004.
Belyaev, along with his wife, allegedly kidnapped fellow Russian writer Ligor Badaev and his wife Regina and 13-year old daughter Hillary.
The family was taken against their will to Laguna de Papalacta in eastern Ecuador, while Belyaev waited for Badaev to receive money, that he intended to steal.
Belyaev and his wife ended up murdering the family, and stealing their possessions and $200,000.
Through Interpol’s investigation with Ecuadorian police forces, it was determined that Belyaev had illegally entered Colombia about a year ago, a fact which was deduced through the tracing of his internet activity. Belyaev had allegedly been cloning credit cards and swindling money from banks.
After Belyaev was attacked and beaten in Bogota earlier in the week, local police forces did a background check and found the red alert from Interpol.
Belyaev will be extradited to Ecuador to face criminal charges. His wife is still at large.
