Police: 49,000 paras and guerrillas demobilized since 2002

More than 49,000 paramilitaries and guerrillas have demobilized since 2002, Colombian Police said Thursday.

The majority, 32,000, were members of the AUC who handed in their weapons during the massive demobilization of the AUC in 2006 and 2007.

11,000 members of the FARC individually demobilized in the past six years, just as nearly 7,000 paramilitaries, 2,300 ELN guerrillas and nearly 500 of other illegal armed groups, the Police communique said.
