To see Dr. Freddy Sanabria in the operating room is a delight, as he is one of Colombia’s most outstanding plastic surgeons.
His surgical techniques and post-operative outcomes are above reproach, but even more than that –his private clinic in Bogota offers services and facilities that have demonstrated commitment to patient safety and quality on every occasion.
Part of this is due to his training and qualifications; he graduated from Javeriana University medical school, along with several visits to the United States as both a medical student (Brown, University of Pennsylvania) and as a resident (University of Pennsylvania.)
Highly skilled surgeon operating in one of the nicest private clinics in Bogota. Well-trained staff, and excellent adherence to all recommended international protocols and standards.
Surgical Apgar: 9.5
Joint Commission accreditation: no
Sanabria also completed a residency in Hand Surgery at Stanford, in Palo Alto, Ca. In addition, he has written several chapters in one of the primary plastic surgical textbooks used in Colombia. He is currently listed as one of the preferred providers for the American Embassy.
The other part is his dedication to surgical excellence; he is a firm adherent to surgical checklists and operative safety practices, and utilizes AtulGawande’s surgical apgar score in his practice. He also tracks all of his surgical outcomes as part of a continuous improvement project.
Sanabria speaks fluent English, and has a congenial and friendly bedside manner. Much of his practice consists of repeat clientele and word-of-mouth referrals. He reports that he is very selective in his patients and the procedures that he performs to ensure that patients have excellent results.
The surgeon is careful to ensure that patients fully understand the procedures prior to surgery and have realistic expectations. To assure this, he has several educational videos for patients that explain procedures, demonstrate immediate and long-term results and discuss possible complications.
Dr. Sanabria performs a wide range of both body and facial procedures, and during multiple visits he was observed performing many of these procedures including abdominoplasty, breast augmentation, mammoplexy, face and eye lift procedures and liposuction. During one case which involved repair of a large inguinal hernia in combination with two cosmetic procedures, he was assisted by a local general surgeon, Dr. Jose Feliz Castro.
Dr. Freddy Sanabria comes from a family of physicians; his father, Dr. John Sanabria G. shares his plastic surgery practice and his mother practices as a pediatric/ adult ENT specialist across the hall and often assists with functional repairs in rhinoplasty and ocular cases.
The Sanabria Clinic
His office includes a free-standing same day surgery center. Unlike many of private clinics visited in Bogota, his clinic is modern, clean and up-to-date with four well equipped operating rooms and recovery areas, as well as on-site sterile processing. All of the operating rooms were large, well lit, with modern equipment. Between cases, a cleaning crew thoroughly cleans each operating room suite in accordance to recommended standards of cleanliness and hygiene.
While he primarily operates in his office, he maintains privileges at both Clinicadel Country and Santa Fe de Bogota.
In the operating room
In the operating room, both a verbal and written a pre-operative “time out” was performed as part of the pre-operative checklist, anti-embolic devices used in all cases estimated to last more than two hours, pre-operative antibiotic administered appropriately. General anesthesia was used for all of the cases, with continuous anesthesia monitoring and appropriate hemodynamic monitoring. The anesthesiologist, Dr. NohemaLafont, was in attendance at all times. There was no intra-operative hypotension or other complications.
Sterile technique was maintained throughout all of the cases. Patients were positioned safely, with care taken to maintain airway patency particularly during cases requiring re-positioning intra-operatively (such as bilateral liposuction procedures.)
Dr. Sanabria uses Johnson & Johnson (Mentor) breast implants, which are FDA approved. He tries to minimize patient contact with latex, and latexparticles, which he believes contributes to thedevelopment of capsular contracture. During all procedures, Dr. Sanabria demonstrated goodsurgical techniques with excellent attention to fine detailswith meticulous incision closure. Surgical staff were ableto anticipate his needs and worked well with Dr. Sanabria.
