PG warrants arrest for several DAS officials

Colombia’s Prosecutor General’s Office warrented the arrest of fourteen
DAS officials, including four former executives of the country’s
intelligence agency. All suspects are accused of illegally wiretapping
government opponents.

The fourteen are accused of having illegally intercepted the communication of Supreme Court magistrates, opposition politicians, human rights advocates and even prominent members of the church.

Among those who will have to go to jail are the former deputy director of the DAS,Jose Miguel Narvaez, former intelligence and counterintelligence directors Fernando Tabares and Jorge Lagos and the former deputy analysis director Marta Ines Leal. The remaining ten were part of the so-called G3-unit, that allegedly carried out the wiretaps.

The arrest warrant is one of the last carried outunder Prosecutor General Mario Iguaran, who leaves the service the end of this month.

Other suspects who are still being investigated, but whose arrest has not been warrented are four former directors of the agency and the former director of the Colombia’s financial police.

The next prosecutor, whose election has been delayed, will have to decide if these former directors will have to be arrested too.
