PG to investigate 174 cases involving threats made via the internet

Colombia’s PG’s Office is to investigate 174 cases of threats made over the internet, following the abuse received by one of President Uribe’s sons via Facebook.

The Prosecutor General’s Office announced its intention to investigate some 174 cases where the internet has been used as a means to threaten individuals and undermine organizations, following the recent announcement that FBI agents assisted Colombian authorities in locating the youth responsible for threatening President Alvaro Uribe’s son via Facebook.

Since 2008, when a branch of the prosecution called the IT Crime Unit was launched, investigations have been carried out into the use of social sites such as MySpace, Hi5 and Facebook, reported newspaper El Espectador Friday.

According to El Espectador, though the investigations are progressing, they are hindered by the fact that threats and abuse are usually made from non-personal computers. As a result it may not be possible to locate the person responsible for the abuse through the computer’s IP address.
