Colombian Prosecutor General Mario Iguaran accused Inspector General Alejandro Ordoñez of achieving “little to nothing” live on W Radio Tuesday. The attack follows criticism by Ordoñez of Iguaran’s failure to act in the 1989 assassination case of Presidential candidate Luis Carlos Galan.
Iguaran began by thanking Ordoñez for his concern. “First I should rejoice in the Inspector General’s interest in this case, as previously inspector generals have limited themselves to keeping up to date on rulings and asking for photocopies,” he said.
Referring to the acquittal of former minister Galán, Iguaran accused Ordoñez of absolving the suspect “at a crucial time when we were seeking his sentencing”.
Ordoñez has since criticized Iguaran for not labelling the murder a State crime.
“The difference between us [the Prosecutor General’s office] and the Inspector General is that we haven’t made it a State crime until we investigate if there were State agents involved,” said Iguaran.
“I’m delighted that the Inspector General has become so interested and now wants to work with us… we haven’t seen any collaboration from his office previously,” he added.
Iguaran went on the criticize the Inspector General’s lack of participation in other cases, including the investigation into the murder of journalist Jaime Garzon
