Pereira forces Santa Fe out top 8

by Adriaan Alsema November 3, 2008

Pereira surprisingly beat long time number two of the Copa Mustang Santa Fe at home and forced the Bogotá team to the ninth position of the Copa Mustang.

De Almeida opened the score for the hosts in the 33rd minutre, and Quintero added a second on the hour mark to help his side to a 2-0 win.

Medellín, who strongly beat Cali in their brand new stadium, now occupies the second position of the league, followed by Pereira. Both are most likely to be in the play offs of the second leg of the 2008 Copa Mustang.

DIM’s Quintero broke the deadlock on 54 minutes, and Córdoba doubled the advantage ten minutes later.

América de Cali moved into fifth place with a 0-2 victory at Deportes Quindío. Parra and Armero provided the goals.

Junior Barranquilla did themselves a great favour, beating Boyaca Chicó 1-0 with a goal from Yanez after just nine minutes. Junior are now sixth and have a good chance of advancing.

Millonarios were held to a goalless draw by Once Caldas, and find themselves in a risky seventh position. The draw helps Caldas even less, being plased in eleventh position themselves.

Atlético Nacional have recovered from a poor season start just in time and entered the top eight with a hard-fought win over Pasto. Nacional scored twice through Galvan, of which one came from the penalty spot. Mosquera netted for Pasto.

La Equidad were supposed to host Envigado on Sunday but bad weather in the south of Bogotá affected the pitch too much to allow the match to continue.

Atlético Bucaramanga travelled to league leaders Tolima, who are already certain of making it to the next round, but couldn’t take advantage of their opponents’ possible lack of motivation and drew 0-0.

The bottom-of-the-table clash between Cúcuta and Huila ended in a 2-0 victory to the home team, who now still have a chance of not finishing in last place. Córdoba scored on 39 minutes and Amarilla added a second just before full time.

Because there are no more than three points difference between the number two and number ten, the remaining two rounds decide who will proceed to the playoffs and who can enjoy Christmas holiday.

Equidad still has to play Envigado, meaning both still have the chance of gaining three points.
