Pastor charged with sexual abuse free on bail

An evangelical pastor, turned himself in to Bogota authorities Saturday after being charged with the sexual abuse of five minors and women, was released by a judge on Monday.

According to the judge, Reverend Alvaro Jose Gamez is not a danger to society and there is no merit in keeping him behind bars during his trial.

Prosecutors and the Inspector’s General Office immediately appealed the decision.

According to Cali newspaper El Pais, the religious leader sexually abused at least 27 women, most of them minors. Although there is evidence implicating Gamez in the abuse of dozens of women, only five have come forward to file formal complaints against their former pastor.

The reverend surrendered after being on the run for one month. He fled his congretation when the evidence against him was submitted to local authorities.
