Partido de la U insists on referendum debate

Colombian coalition party Partido de la U, organizer of the referendum
to demand the possibility for president Álvaro Uribe to be re-elected,
insists Congress moves forward with the popularly demanded
constitutional change.

The party denies the debate on the re-election will stall the political and judicial reforms the Government wants to be dealt with first.

“The system permits flexibility and we’ll be fully able to attend the issues of the political and judicial reform,” party secretary Luis Guillermo Giraldo told newspaper El Espectador.

Partido de la U will ask Interior and Justice Minister Fabio Valencia Cossio to present the referendum in Congress.

Uribe had earlier signaled he prefers to skip the 2010 elections and run again for president in 2014.
